Mediterranean Roots

In June 2017, Amanda had the pleasure of co-directing a new program for Apollo's Fire entitled Mediterranean Roots. Brian Kay (lute, oud and vocals) and Amanda created and arranged the show with arrangement help from master composer and bassist, Dave Morgan (also Amanda's collaborator for Beyond Boundaries). They assembled an amazing ensemble of musicians to explore the early music of the Mediterranean. The show was a huge hit with audiences!

Amanda flexed her creative arranging skills on this fun Sephardic piece entitled Tres Hermanikas. At each performance she told the story a bit differently and the group improvised around her brilliantly. This recording was captured at the beloved Baroque Barn in Hunting Valley, OH.

Virtuosic recorder player, Daphna Mor brought this amazing arrangement of two Arabic dance tunes to Mediterranean Roots. It was the "party" set of the show and the audience went wild to hear the ensemble explore and improvise through this joyful repertoire.

The audience gets into clapping and stomping mode and are encouraged by the orchestra to get up and dance to through the musical journey.......The Apollo’s Fire orchestra is reactive to this, with Powell directly stating to the audience at one point that they feed off our energy. The musicians are often observed swaying with their eyes closed to the others’ music, motioning their arms almost like ravers beckoning a beat drop.
— Pressure Life Magazine, 2017
Powell sang rivetingly in a variety of vocal styles.......Kay and Powell split up duties as the afternoon’s emcees, bringing their engaging personalities to the fore, but always stepping back to become integral members of the ensemble.

Beyond Boundaries at Underground Classical

In August 2016, Amanda premiered her Beyond Boundaries project as the first concert of the brand new Underground Classical concert series. Held in a Cleveland fiber arts studio, people were invited to come hear music "among the art". The premise of the concert series is to support classical musicians who are branching out into other genres and still incorporating their classical training and roots into their work. The concert included jazz standards, global folk songs, music by Strauss and Purcell and original tunes. Check out more of the videos on youtube!

Amanda has led creative and engaging worship and workshops all over the world. Whether for a few hundred or ten thousand people, Amanda engages people in song with her spirited energy, story-telling and wide-open invitation.

Amanda was joined by a wonderful trio of musicians; Lessie Vonner (trumpet), Danielle Grubb (bass and guitar) and Nisha Purushotham (percussion) to lead worship at the Limitless Young Women's conference at Duke University. The gathering song time before opening worship helped the band and congregation get to know one another and prepare for amazing worship together!

Amanda begins at the piano for this pick-up choir experience at the Montreat Youth Event Alpha week 1. She and co-director, Eric Wall put together this medley of songs from the "roots" of religious tradition: an ancient Gloria, a Hebrew prayer for peace, an African-American spiritual and the beloved hymn, Amazing Grace. Amanda's lovely daughters, Sofia and Luisa sing in the front row of the choir!
